Carlin dominates Monza practice

Rupert Svendsen-Cook led a Carlin 1-2-3-4 in free practice for this weekend's season-opening British Formula 3 races at Monza

The Briton showed the rest the way impressively in the first half of the hour-long session, then led a flurry of last-gasp improvements as the track rubbered in.

Svendsen-Cook's 1m45.304s best lap of the Italian Grand Prix circuit left him 0.162 seconds clear of Brazilian team-mate Felipe Nasr, who jumped to second with his final lap of the session.

Kevin Magnussen looked likely to end up quickest until Svendsen-Cook and Nasr toppled him with their late efforts. The Dane's best lap was still good enough for third, a further 0.115s back from Nasr, while Colombian Carlos Huertas lapped a further tenth of a second slower to go fourth.

Fortec's Lucas Foresti was the highest placed of the non-Carlin drivers and the quickest Mercedes-engined runner. He and team-mate Will Buller sandwiched Carlin's Jazeman Jaafar in sixth. These three were the last of the drivers in the 21-car field to break the 1m46s barrier around the 3.6-mile track.

Carlin's Jack Harvey showed strong pace during the first half of the session, before joining Hitech's series latecomer Bruno Mendez in going off at the Parabolica.

Harvey's 1m46.095s best was still good enough for eighth, clear of Hitech duo Pietro Fantin and Riki Christodoulou, who rounded out a top 10 covered by just over a second.
