Carlin dominance causes concern
The Carlin Motorsport outfit has become the team to beat in the British Formula 3 Championship and with drivers Takuma Sato and Anthony Davidson taking a dominant one-two in Sunday's non-championship British Grand Prix support race, rivals are starting to wonder what they have to do to catch them
Although no points were up for grabs at Silverstone in front of the Grand Prix crowd, much was available in terms of boosting reputations, and the Carlin pair made an impression by finishing almost half a minute ahead of third-placed Andy Priaulx.
"They are both very impressive," said team boss Trevor Carlin of his two aces, "They're just great drivers and there is very little to choose between them. They really help each other and push one another all the way."
Davidson has taken three wins so far this year, his rookie season, as well as victory in the showpiece street race at Pau, and with Sato leading the drivers' standings by 50 points, the championship is in danger of becoming a one-team race.
Jaguar Junior driver James Courtney is currently third in the standings behind Derek Hayes. The Australian finished 28th at Silverstone on Sunday after a first lap skirmish with Gianmaria Bruni. When asked if he was concerned by the pace of the Carlin cars, he said: "Yes, it's very worrying."
Davidson and Sato also have an established link to Formula 1 as both are test drivers this year for the British American Racing team. Despite their obvious pace and connections however, Carlin believes both will struggle to get into F1 next year.
"I don't think either of them will get F1 drives next year," he said. "They are both more than capable, but there just aren't the seats available."
The teams move to Donington next weekend for round nine of the series and with another 20 points available, rivals will hope the Carlin momentum can be stopped if Sato taking the championship is to be anything other than a foregone conclusion.
