Button fastest in first session

Jenson Button claimed provisional pole position at the end of first qualifying for the Korean Grand Prix on Saturday as pre-event favourite Darren Manning lost his temper

Button drove superbly during an incident filled session that saw compatriot Matt Davies crash into the wall and cause a red flag. His time, which was set in the even numbered session, was ahead of Tiago Monteiro and Luciano Burti. Manning, in the odd-numbered session, was outpaced by Peter Sundberg and Christijan Albers during an incident free session, but he blew his lid after apparently being blocked by Julien Beltoise on his final lap.

The winner of the Macau Grand Prix gesticulated with his hand and nudged the back of his French rival's car as they entered the pit-lane. Then, after exchanging a few words, he stormed back to his pit.

Manning ended the session seventh overall but because of the grid system, with odd-numbered cars down one side of the field and even-numbered cars down the other, he provisionally starts fourth.

The second session will take place on Saturday afternoon.
