Silverstone European F3: Ilott beats Eriksson to race three win
Callum Ilott scored a superb win in the final race of the Formula 3 European Championship opening round at Silverstone after an early battle with Saturday winner Joel Eriksson
Once again Eriksson got a good start from third on the grid, and he replicated his race-two opening-lap pass on Ilott by sweeping around the outside of the Briton at Brooklands.
But this time Ilott didn't let BMW junior Eriksson get away, and he pulled off a fantastic manoeuvre on the Swede around the outside into Stowe Corner on the fourth lap.
From then on the Prema Powerteam Dallara-Mercedes pulled away, Ilott stabilising the gap at four seconds through the middle of the race before extending it near the end to finish 6.815s clear of the Motopark Dallara-Volkswagen of championship leader Eriksson.
Friday's race one winner Lando Norris was again slow off the line, the Carlin driver dropping to fourth from the front row.
He immediately engaged in a battle with Maximilian Gunther for third, and finally made a move stick on the Prema man on the sixth lap.
McLaren-Honda junior Norris squeezed down the inside at Stowe and the duo ran side by side into Club before the reigning Formula Renault Eurocup champion swooped around the outside to gain the position.
Once up to third, Norris gained on Eriksson, but never got close enough to mount a strong bid for second.
Force India protege Jehan Daruvala this time made the most of a strong grid position to establish himself in fifth place in the early going.
But Daruvala soon came under pressure from Carlin team-mate Jake Dennis, and the Brit grabbed fifth place around the outside into Club. Dennis then caught Gunther, but this time ran out of time to repeat their intense fourth-place fight from Saturday.
Mick Schumacher spun at Stowe on the opening lap and Guan Yu Zhou had race-ending contact at Club one corner further on, promoting Nikita Mazepin to seventh place, the Hitech GP driver scoring his first points of the season.
Van Amersfoort Racing duo Joey Mawson and Harrison Newey ran in close formation in eighth and ninth before the Australian drew away, Newey then doing enough to keep final point scorer Ralf Aron (Hitech) at bay.
