Meritus eyes main GP2 series for '11
Meritus has confirmed that it is in talks to join the main GP2 Series field in Europe from 2011
The team has so far only competed in GP2 Asia, where every year it takes the place of Racing Engineering - the only one of the main GP2 squads not to participate in the winter mini-series.
A long-time powerhouse on the Asian single seater scene, Meritus took its first GP2 victory with Luca Filippi in the recent Sakhir rounds, and with a space now available in the full GP2 championship due to the loss of Durango, it has an eye on joining its Asia rivals in Europe as well.
Team co-owner Firhat Mokhzani said that GP2 chief Bruno Michel was keen for Meritus to add a full campaign.
"The main GP2 series will support 15 of the 19 Formula 1 races and we are holding discussions about our entry to Europe," Mokhzani confirmed. "The team had been invited by Michel to race in Europe even before we achieved our historic victory.
"Now that we have shown we are capable of winning, we will look into the possibility of taking up the offer. Racing in Europe will certainly race the team's profile and by competing in the main GP2 series, we will get more exposure racing alongside the F1 championship for only a fraction of the cost."
