Davide Valsecchi says his capture of GP2 points lead was 'deserved'

Davide Valsecchi believes his capture of the GP2 championship lead was 'deserved' following a strong weekend at Monza

The Italian driver moved ahead of title rival Luiz Razia after winning Sunday's race, having finished in sixth position on Saturday.

Razia, tied on points with Valsecchi ahead of the weekend, failed to score and now trails the DAMS driver by 25 points going into the final round in Singapore.

Valsecchi feels positive about his chances and reckons it will be hard for Razia to beat him to the title.

"We raced really well, when it was really important, we showed that we deserved to gain the lead in the championship," said Valsecchi.

"It was important to show that we are a real contender for the title. To beat us, they will need to make a really big effort."

He added: "I'm leading now, and I'm positive, because my car is fast, and I will go to Singapore, a wonderful place that I have never been to before, and it is a street circuit, where usually I'm strong.

"So right now I am fine, and I hope to be fine also at the end of the weekend there."

Razia said he did not expect to lose so much ground to his rival in the championship, and concedes he is facing an uphill battle ahead of the final race.

The Brazilian, however, believes he has nothing to lose and reckons the title is still possible.

"Monza was not an easy weekend and I didn't foresee that the championship situation would become so difficult," he said. "It is what it is, though, and I have to move on and put a bad weekend behind me.

"It's time to forget about Monza and concentrate on Singapore. The title battle isn't yet over and I will give it my best shot - as I have done throughout the season.

"It has made things more difficult in the championship, but we're still in the hunt and I will push as hard as I can. Right now, I've nothing to lose."
