Alex Zanardi is expected to be discharged from hospital at the end of the week - four weeks after losing both his legs in a horror crash in a Champ Car race in Berlin.
The former Formula One driver had to have both legs amputated after a collision with Alex Tagliani at the new Lausitzring track near Berlin and he has since been treated at the Marzahn Hospital in the German capital.
Zanardi, 34, who drove for Williams, was re-united with his three-year-old son Niccolo for the first time on Wednesday and he will be discharged from hospital at the end of the week.
"I have a lot of work, a lot of therapy and rehabilitation ahead of me but my number one goal right now is to learn how to walk again," Zanardi told cart.com. "That sounds exciting to me right now. Obviously it is boring to most people, but just being able to walk again is something that will make me happier than you can imagine.
"I just want to be able to stand up, walk over to my son and put him on my shoulder. I have very much to live for."
Zanardi, who won 15 times in America's Champ Car series, lost 70 per cent of his blood in the accident in the American Memorial 500 but was saved by the medical team at the circuit.
