Williams supports FIA's radical wing

Team boss Frank Williams has expressed his support for the radical new wing the FIA plan to introduce in Formula One

The sport's governing body unveiled last month a radical rear wing concept  - Centreline Downwash Generating Wing - that it said could lead to far more overtaking in the sport by 2007.

Williams admitted the new device looks strange, but he is ready to support it if it helps improve the show.

"You have to admit that it looks strange" said Williams. "When I saw the new rear wing concept for the first time, I thought: what is this supposed to be? But if it really helps to make overtaking easier, thus improving the racing, then it's good for Formula One."

Williams revealed the wing had already been showed to team bosses prior to its unveiling, but he could not hide the fact that he was still surprised to see the radical design.

"Max Mosley brought several documents and sketches to China, and he presented them to several teams - including ours," he said.

"Afterwards, we had a short discussion regarding the topic. It's true, it came as a bit of a surprise, but on the other hand it was foreseeable that a proposition in this area would come."
