Williams launch: Drivers so equal

BMW's motorsport boss Gerhard Berger reckons the fight for supremacy within Williams between Ralf Schumacher and Juan Pablo Montoya this year will change at each race

The rivalry between the pair simmered throughout last year, with Montoya getting an edge on the German over the final races of the season. But he will be hard pushed to maintain that, according to Berger.

"Such a strong driver line up will be a real catalyst to push us on," he said at the team's 2002 launch, held at Silverstone this morning (Friday). "My expectation is that the drivers will enjoy a closely matched degree of success during the year. Juan will be better on some circuits, Ralf on others. Both of them have proved they can win Grand Prix races."

Team principal Frank Williams believes that the line-up of Schumacher and Montoya makes for the best in F1.

"After four commanding victories, four pole positions and eight lap records in our second year together, our expectations for the third season are high," said Williams. "We have great hopes for our new chassis, the FW24, and for the new P82 BMW engine. Beyond that, we've got the strongest team of drivers. Ralf Schumacher and Juan Pablo Montoya are different personalities with different driving styles, but their goals are identical."
