Williams and Renault in Action at Valencia - Day One

The Williams and Renault teams kicked off on Monday a seven-day testing session at the Valencia circuit, running in simulated wet-weather conditions.

The Williams and Renault teams kicked off on Monday a seven-day testing session at the Valencia circuit, running in simulated wet-weather conditions.

Juan Pablo Montoya set the pace on this first day at the Spanish circuit, the Colombian being more than half a second quicker than teammate Ralf Schumacher.

Spaniard Fernando Alonso, driving last year's chassis, was the fastest of the Renault duo present at Valencia, finishing ahead of compatriot Marc Gene and Jarno Trulli in the Renault R202. The Italian's day, however, was curtailed as he was feeling unwell.

"Once again, it was a useful day's testing for the team," said Renault's technical director Mike Gascoyne. "Conducting tyre work for Michelin, we ran the R202 in the wet for the first time, and neither driver experienced any mechanical problems, although Jarno's illness ended his day early."

Testing at Valencia continues on Tuesday, when Jordan, Sauber and Minardi are scheduled to join.

Today's times:
