Williams admits 'clumsy mistake'
Frank Williams has emphasised that the brake duct transgression that saw both his cars disqualified from last weekend's Canadian Grand Prix was an oversight and not an attempt to gain an advantage
"You can say the responsibility stops with me," Williams said, "But we're a large organization, there was a chain of events that occurred and we were very clumsy. But I hope everyone believes that there was no implication whatsoever of seeking an aerodynamic advantage with that by cheating. We made a mistake, we paid a heavy price, and we have no quarrel with that."
Williams added that the team now just wants to forget about the matter, which cost it 12 points in the constructors' championship and now sees it languishing 16 points behind third-placed BAR Honda in the constructors' battle.
"It's behind us as far as I'm concerned," Williams said. "We'd far rather look ahead to this weekend but we learn from our mistakes, and clearly we learned very heavily last weekend..."
Ralf Schumacher added: "I think we are all disappointed, especially the mechanics. It was a result we were desperately looking for, but that's the way it is. In my time at Williams we have never had a problem, and it was just an unfortunate incident.
"As Frank said, we have never and will never cheat. And it doesn't change the fact that we had a great race. I think everybody saw that. The car was well-suited to Montreal. We can have another good race here at Indy, but it will certainly be a bit more difficult."
