Webber earns a point for Jaguar

Jaguar Racing scored its first point of the season in Bahrain when Mark Webber bagged a fortunate eighth place after Juan Pablo Montoya's hydraulic system failed on the Williams-BMW late on

The Aussie made a good start and fought hard all day after a poor qualifying performance left him 14th on the grid. He made his way up to eighth position mid-race and put a staunch defence from Renault's Fernando Alonso, much to the Spaniard's annoyance, before finding himself ninth after the final pitstops. He passed Montoya on the final lap, having made up 30 seconds on the Williams in three laps as the Colombian slowed.

"It was really good to get our first point today," said Webber. "The team has worked incredibly hard towards this and it's well deserved.

"I started well and was up to tenth position on my first lap, which to be honest is where I should have qualified. During my first pit stop we made a slight flap change but it was perhaps too much and I had a minor off on turn 13. It made no real difference in the end but I was lucky to catch it.

"We know we still have a few areas to work on but we are making good progress and these days you need a perfect weekend to score points. We have learnt a lot here and we will be taking this with us to Imola where again we will be looking to challenge for points."

Webber wasn't the only Jaguar driver to get involved in the fight. Young Austrian team-mate Christian Klien got hit at the start by Alonso but unfazed set about harassing Kimi Raikkonen's McLaren. Klien passed Raikkonen twice on laps three and four but each time ran wide on the exit of the corner. The pair continued to dice until Raikkonen's engine failed on lap seven. Klien then spun but finished the race 14th.

"There was a lot going on in the race today," said Klien, "and for me there were highs and lows. My start was okay and despite the difficult first two corners all was well until I has a slight coming together with Alonso on the third hairpin. The car suffered only minor damage and I continued with good balance.

"I then enjoyed racing with Raikkonen. The car felt really good and I was making the most of its pace. I then made an error and I spun at corner 11. This cost me a few places and after this I was really just pleased to finish. The track was still quite dirty off-line although it was still good fun to at least try to overtake."
