Webber benefits from late running spot

Jaguar ace Mark Webber was pleased to set the third fastest time in first qualifying for the Hungarian Grand Prix today (Friday), although he admitted that his relatively late running spot helped him to vault ahead of faster rivals who were forced to run early on a dirty track

By contrast, the Australian's team-mate, Justin Wilson, had a torrid day. The Briton lost a lot of running time in the first practice session due to a gearbox problem and then struggled with the car's handling on his qualifying run, on which he went 15th fastest.

"I am very pleased with how today has gone," said Webber, who ran 10th in the session. "The team and I have been working hard on set-up and balance and the car feels generally quite good. The fact that we actually went out in tenth position today did play into our hands somewhat as we benefited from a cleaner track."

Wilson said: "A frustrating morning for me as I was forced to miss quite a lot of the first session because of a gearbox problem. Despite that I have enjoyed driving the car as the balance and set-up is good. I enjoyed qualifying although the car was quite lively. I am generally pleased with 15th position although of course it will be tomorrow that really counts."

Despite Wilson's problems, Jaguar's head of vehicle performance Dr Mark Gillan was pleased with the rookie driver's progress.

"Justin has done a good job in the car today despite the fact that he actually missed a good deal of the end of first practice, when the track was at its best," he said. "He is settling into the team very quickly and we are pleased with how he is progressing."
