Valencia to increase airport security

Spanish authorities have promised to step up security at Valencia airport for next month's European Grand Prix in light of a recent spate of thefts

The FIA's security chief Thierry Jouan has written to F1 personnel warning them that they are a 'high-risk population', and to take extra precautions at the airport because of recent problems.

"For several months now, we have been the victim of organised and repeated thefts (more or less aggressive), whether inside the airport, at the exit while waiting for a taxi, or in the car parks while collecting rental cars," wrote Jouan.

"The Police authorities, with whom I last met in the middle of May 2009, have promised me that they will increase security in the town, and especially at the airport (in all the common areas), during the week of the F1 GP of Europe, while stepping up passenger surveillance both inside and outside."

Jouan has advised that those flying into Valencia for the race take extra care of their personal possessions at the airport.
