Valencia, day 1: Pizzonia fastest

Williams test driver Antonio Pizzonia set the pace on the opening day of running at the Valencia circuit in Spain

Two other teams, Renault and British American Racing, were also in attendance. Jordan will join them tomorrow (Wednesday).

Pizzonia carried out high-downforce work in preparation for next week's Monaco Grand Prix. Meanwhile, his fellow Williams test driver Marc Gene appeared to carrying out experimental running. A device shaped like a can of drink was spotted on the front suspension pick-up points, while the engine note coming from his BMW motor was reported to vary from lap to lap.

The presence of a cheerful Jacques Villeneuve was something of a surprise. The Canadian, who usually leaves the majority of testing miles to Olivier Panis and BAR's test drivers, is planning to carry on driving tomorrow. He is then due at Jerez for a separate test on Thursday and Friday to carry out braking tests to prepare for the demands of the Montreal Canadian Grand Prix circuit.
