Valencia day 1 am: Button flies in wet

Renault's Jenson Button was fastest this morning (Monday) as Michelin tested its wet weather rubber at Valencia in Spain

Button led the seven cars present, as the French rubber manufacturer soaked the circuit every 15 minutes. Ironically the weather in Spain is warm and sunny, which has led to frenzied activity followed by a long lull while the track was doused again.

Button was 0.7secs quicker than McLaren's David Coulthard. Jarno Trulli was third fastest in the second Renault, but he has been off the track twice already this morning.

Juan Pablo Montoya was fourth quickest for Williams-BMW, ahead of Kimi Raikkonen (McLaren) and the Jaguars of Eddie Irvine and Pedro de la Rosa. Irvine also hit trouble this morning, his Jaguar grinding to a halt with mechanical woes.

No 2002 cars are being used today, and neither Toyota or Minardi will take part in the test today. Bridgestone teams British American Racing, Jordan and Ferrari have arrived in preparation for tomorrow's open test.
