Trulli and Renault Keep Monaco's Fourth Place

Italian Jarno Trulli kept his points for fourth place in the Monaco Formula One Grand Prix on Tuesday after his Renault passed a post-race technical inspection.
The governing International Automobile Federation (FIA) confirmed the results of Sunday's race after further checks were completed at the team's factory on a suspect electronic unit from the car.
The FIA had cast doubt on Trulli's position on Sunday evening when it announced that all cars except his had passed a technical inspection and his points would remain provisional pending a more detailed examination.
Had he been stripped of the three points, rivals Jordan, Arrows and Ferrari would have moved up a position. An extra point for Arrows would have allowed them to leapfrog both Minardi and Toyota into eighth place.
The FIA said that the rechecked unit, which formed part of the car's launch control system, "was found to be in conformity with the requirements of the 2002 Formula One technical regulations".
"Car 14 (Trulli) will therefore retain its position in the final results," the FIA said.
The problem arose after a seal, confirming that the unit had been checked by the FIA at the beginning of the season to ensure it had no illegal function, was found to be missing.
In the past, seals had to remain on programmable electronic units but that stipulation was relaxed after so-called 'driver aids' were legalised last year.
However, the FIA said the absence of a seal meant the unit had to be passed again: "In the case of this particular component, the checks could only be carried out away from the circuit, rather like checking an engine."
