Toro Rosso targeting midfield

Toro Rosso's co-owner Gerhard Berger believes his team should be fighting in the midfield within three years

The Italian squad scored just one point during the 2006 season, despite performing better than in their previous era as Minardi.

Berger's team will use Ferrari engines in 2007 in the hope that it will help them move closer to the front of field.

"Toro Rosso have had a good season in 2006. We've always kept a certain level of competitiveness, but now things will get harder," Berger told Autosprint magazine.

"My plans are that we'll consistently be a midfield team within three years. To do that we'll have to fight against teams like Williams or even Red Bull Racing themselves.

"On Sunday afternoons everyone is a rival for me, even though Red Bull is our 'mum' and we have a particular relationship with them."

Berger said he has no intention to move the team out of Italy in the future, but he admitted they will build a new factory within the next years.

"We are interested in staying in Italy," said Berger. "At the moment we still are in the ex-Minardi factory, but in the next years we want to build a new factory, still in Faenza or otherwise in Forli.

"The important thing for the team is to keep our Italian image."
