Teams busy testing changes for Monaco
The Formula One teams have been busy testing in the two-week gap between
the San Marino and Monaco Grands Prix, with several of the test sessionsbeing behind closed doors. However, rain has affected several of the
tests.
Ferrari and Minardi have been testing at Fiorano, with Luca Badoer driving for
both teams. Minardi were testing the long-wheelbase car they ran at Imola,
while Ferrari were trying out engine mapping and power steering changes, with
Eddie Irvine and Michael Schumacher also testing.
McLaren took both Mika Hakkinen and David Coulthard to Magny-Cours, along with
test driver Nick Heidfeld. The secret tests were said to be trying out different
engine settings.
Prost also ran at Magny-Cours, but only on Thursday, trying out engine and
mechanical changes for Monaco. Both Olivier Panis and Jarno Trulli drove in
the test.
Benetton opted to head to Spain, and ran a secret test at Barcelona. The track
was modified with chicanes, to help simulate the tight Monaco circuit, but this
also made lap times difficult to judge. The team were rumoured to be trying out
a Ferrari-style 'periscope' exhaust - McLaren have also admitted testing such a
modification.
Jordan went to the French Lurcy-Levis circuit, with Andrew Gilbert-Scott testing
aerodynamic and engine mapping changes. Heinz-Harald Frentzen is scheduled to
continue testing at the track on Tuesday.
Williams, Stewart, BAR and Sauber went to Nogaro, the track popular because
its tight corners make an ideal preparation for Monaco. Mika Salo was
testing alongside Jacques Villeneuve, and the Finn will again deputise for
the injured Ricardo Zonta at Monte Carlo.
Arrows were the only team not to do any testing, the team concentrating
on repairing the damage caused to its cars at Imola. Tora Takagi is
expected to carry out a shake-down test at the Santa Pod drag strip before
the cars are loaded on the transporters for Monaco.
