Teams begin final testing push

All three of Formula 1's leading teams will conduct major testing programmes this week in preparation for the final race of the season at Suzuka. Despite the Drivers' championship being all-but settled, there is still plenty for each team to fight for in Japan

Ferrari will be in action at Mugello in Italy, where they will conduct a four-day programme beginning today (Tuesday). Michael Schumacher may be virtually guaranteed the Drivers' crown, but the team only has a three-point lead over Williams in the Constructors' standings, so will not want to risk complacency.

Kimi Raikkonen is the only driver who can deny Schumacher the crown - but needs a victory in Suzuka to do so. His McLaren team will be hard at work at Silverstone to optimise the performance of the MP4-17D.

Williams will run for four days at Jerez in Spain, beginning tomorrow, with the team hard at work to snatch the Constructors' crown from Ferrari. Driver Juan Pablo Montoya may be out of the running for the drivers' title but he could still clinch second overall, as he sits just one point behind Raikkonen.

But the big three runners won't be the only teams in action on Europe's testing circuits. BAR and Toyota will run at Mugello and Jerez respectively, as each bids to claim fifth in the Constructors' championship. Minardi, the only team yet to score a point this year, is also due to run at Mugello.
