Stewart Wins BRDC Support

Following a personal address, and pleas from a host of stars including Dario Franchitti, David Coulthard and Murray Walker during the four hour meeting to discuss his future, Stewart won a big majority in holding onto his role as president, and a lesser majority in him keeping his place on the club board.

"My integrity was attacked by a number of members of the club," said Stewart, who had denounced a 'very vicious' campaign against him.

"I have defended it and I am pleased that I received support to continue as President and a Director. We must now work to build a united club working for the future good of Silverstone and British motorsport."

The EGM had been called in the wake of pressure from BRDC members for Stewart to resign, on the back of a major clash with former club chairman Ray Bellm.

Stewart had resisted those calls, despite an informal vote appearing to indicate that a majority of club members wanted him out, and forced the club to call an EGM to discuss his future.

Ahead of the meeting, Stewart warned that he would stand down if the club did not back him in continuing as their president and as remaining on the club board. He believed the president could not do his job if he had no power on the board.

Speaking ahead of the meeting, Stewart had said: "Quite apart from the interests of Jackie Stewart, this is critically important for those who follow me in the presidency. The president has led this club since its inception more than 70 years ago. I would not want to be the one who relinquishes that right."

That stance has paid off, with members backing him to retain both roles and the whole episode has now strengthened his position as President ahead of the club's Annual General Meeting later this month.
