Stewart says Silverstone will keep GP

Silverstone will continue to host Grands Prix after its current contract expires in 2002, according to Jackie Stewart

The veteran racer turned team owner said a deal had been struck between the Northamptonshire circuit and Formula One boss Bernie Ecclestone.

Ecclestone announced at Monaco in May that talks had broken down with Silverstone and a five-year contract had been awarded to Kent rivals Brands Hatch from 2002.

At the time circuit owner Nicola Foulston announced a £20 million building programme to bring the circuit up to modern F1 standards.

'He said he had come to an agreement with Bernie Ecclestone and that they had shaken hands on a deal and it was a done deal until 2006,' said Stewart who is a member of the British Racing Driver's Club who control Silverstone.

'My experience of Bernie is that when he shakes a man's hand on a deal like that he does not go back on it.

'Brands Hatch could not hold a Grand Prix in its present condition due to the track and level of safety.

'A race could take place at Brands somewhere down the line but I can only say what's been printed and they have made a statement saying its going to be in 2002.'
