Special BAFTA for Walker
Legendary F1 commentator Murray Walker was honoured at this weekend's BAFTA awards, the most prestigious in British television
Walker, who retired from the commentary box at the end of 2001, received the Special Award for Contribution to TV. It was fitting recognition for a man who became the voice of Formula 1 to millions of Britons who listened to his hyperactive commentary for the BBC and ITV over the years.
He began commentating on F1 in 1949, before the inception of the world championship! However, his first love was motorcycle racing, courtesy of his father's exploits on two wheels.
Although Walker became a familiar voice on the BBC through his work on F1, motorbikes, rallycross and touring cars, it was a part-time vocation - his day job was in advertising.
When ITV secured the rights to F1 coverage, Walker left the BBC after over 40 years of service, and went on to form a highly successful partnership with Martin Brundle in the commentary booth. Despite being in his 70s, Walker's enthusiasm never waned, and his unique 'trousers on fire' style continued to win over fans.
Perhaps Walker's greatest contribution to TV is the legacy of gaffs he made. Here just a couple of Murray's greatest misses...
"Unless I'm very much mistaken... yes, I AM very much mistaken."
"Do my eyes deceive me, or is Senna's Lotus sounding rough?"
"As you look at the first four, the significant thing is that Alboreto is 5th"
"The young Ralf Schumacher has been upstaged by the teenager Jenson Button, who is 20."
"I imagine the conditions in those cars are totally unimaginable."
"And now excuse me while I interrupt myself..."
