Schumacher sure to fight for Imola win
Michael Schumacher is convinced that Ferrari will be back in the hunt for victory at this weekend's San Marino Grand Prix after claiming that the Maranello outfit will finally show their full potential on home soil
After struggling for pace in the last two Grands Prix, Schumacher believes that a new aerodynamic package and an improved engine will lift the team closer to the pace-setting Renault team - and even be able to gun for a win.
"We tested extensively and very successfully at Vallelunga and Barcelona (last week), and gained a lot of insight," said Schumacher on Monday. "And once again we found to be true what we've been saying all along this year, but unfortunately not had much chance of proving: our pace is good and so is our whole package.
"We're back. Our new aerodynamics and also our improvements in the engine are a definite step in the right direction. Apart from that, we also worked on the tyres and set-up, and it all turned out really well.
"And now, I'll say it again, we have to make the most of our potential - and that means be among the leaders consistently.
"We want to do well at Imola, and we want to take part in the fight for the top ranks. During our tests, we improved our package and now we believe that we've got a car that can secure a win. We don't think the gap is too big to be closed, and Imola will be our first step towards catching up."
Schumacher insists that his confidence about Ferrari's chances this year did not wane in spite of the struggles in recent weeks - even though many of his critics were ready to write his 2006 chances off.
"I've been in this game much too long now, to let anyone throw me off balance. I've seen the tables suddenly turn so many times. The most important thing for us now is that we have the potential to win. Absolutely anything is still possible."
