Schumacher: It could have been worse
Michael Schumacher remains upbeat about clinching both world titles for himself and Ferrari in tomorrow's Japanese Grand Prix, after rain in the final qualifying session today (Saturday) left him down in 14th on the grid
Despite being stung by the weather today the German, who needs to score one point to clinch the Drivers' Championship, is hoping that rain could benefit him in tomorrow's race, especially after his stunning victory in mixed conditions at Indianapolis.
"It was an interesting session, as the varying weather meant that track conditions were inconsistent," said Schumacher. "I am very happy that Rubens [Barrichello] is on pole, as it is good for him, for the team, for the Constructors' Championship and even for my situation in the Drivers'.
"The session could have been much worse for me and I think that Kimi [Raikkonen] was also affected a bit by the rain. Tomorrow the forecast is for mixed conditions, which could suit us."
Ferrari boss Jean Todt reckons that race strategy could be even more important that usual in tomorrow's event.
"We know what we have to do to defend our [championship] positions," said Todt. "It is obvious that, especially because of predictions for more uncertain weather, much will depend on making the right choices at the right time.
"The change to the regulations introduced at the start of the year were designed to add an element of unpredictability to qualifying and here in Suzuka that is exactly what has happened."
