Schuey talks down 10 win season
Formula 1 World Champion Michael Schumacher believes the pace of younger brother Ralf and his Williams-BMW team mate Juan Pablo Montoya will make it tough for him to take the record number of wins in a season to 10 this year
The Ferrari ace took his victory tally for this season to eight after winning in Belgium on Sunday, but Schumacher has to win two more races before the end of the season if he is to beat the current record he shares with 1992 world champion Nigel Mansell.
With only three races remaining this year, at Monza, Indianapolis and Suzuka, the German has his work cut out and he believes his task will be made all the more difficult by the in-form Williams duo, which outqualified him in Belgium last weekend.
"I feel the Williams will be very strong at Monza and at Indianapolis," said Schumacher. "Suzuka will favour us, but as we have seen this season, anything can happen and our car is very competitive in qualifying."
Schumacher notched up nine wins in 1995 to equal Mansell's season tally and did the same again last year. The British sporting hero believes that in his current form, Schumacher is likely to make the record his own.
"The way Michael is driving I can't see anyone stopping him," said Mansell. "He's a fantastic racer and a great bloke. Records are there to be broken and he deserves all the success he can get."
Schumacher's Spa victory on Sunday took his career total of wins to a record-breaking 52, just one more than four-time world champion Alain Prost. But the Ferrari star says he won't be able to fully take in his achievements until after he has retired.
"All these records do mean something to me, because each one is a new milestone in my career," said Schumacher. "But they will be even more special when I retire, because I can then sit on the sofa with a glass of beer and a cigar and reflect on the achievements."
