Former world champion Jody Scheckter expressed his delight on Thursday at Michael Schumacher's drivers' crown and claimed a new title for himself.
Until Sunday, 1979 champion Scheckter had been the last driver to claim the title for Ferrari. That unexpectedly long-standing achievement was finally put to rest when the German won the Japanese Grand Prix on Sunday.
Scheckter wrote in his column in the weekly magazine Autosport he was delighted to see the Italian team win at last.
"It was lovely to see Michael hugging and kissing his team at the end," he wrote.
"You see how a driver like Michael has brought his team together. Most great drivers do that, and most teams need it."
"After getting over the depression of losing my title, I realised I had a big smile while watching Michael come in and park his car.
"You don't have to feel sorry for me -- I've got a title now as Ferrari's longest-standing champion and that will be hard to beat," added the South African, whose son Tomas is joining Jaguar next season as test driver.
