Ron Dennis Q&A
After qualifying, it looked as though McLaren was in for a long afternoon in Belgium on Sunday, but problems for the Williams duo and others enabled David Coulthard to charge through to second place. Mika Hakkinen added a useful three points with fourth, helping to move the team out of the reach of Williams in the battle for second in the constructors' table. With Michael Schumacher clearly in a class of his own, it was the best the team could have hoped for, given its lowly starting position. Adam Cooper caught up with Ron Dennis
"Well, we come to win, but it was something out of nothing really. It was a difficult race, not without problems, but I suppose the result is better than everything other than first."
"Obviously in both instances Michael had some good protection by slower cars, and I think anyone who stood a chance of matching his pace was so far behind. By the time David got into second place there was really not much he could do. But that's motor racing, and qualifying is such an important part of motor racing. Certainly my good friend Frank and his team made it a bit easier for everybody! I'm sure he won't have a particularly pleasant evening, but we all make mistakes."
"I think the Benettons made good starts on everybody, and as you could see Fisichella actually got past Rubens at the start as well. It was a combination of their car and maybe Michelins giving good traction."
"I think they've obviously done a great deal of work. It's good to see them on form, but hopefully they won't continue in that form too much! But they did a good job, and it was interesting to see them not change their front tyres at all. They looked pretty bald to me."
"I think we got it pretty much right. There were no real problems, and I think we got as much out of it as possible. It wasn't an easy race for anybody, and when somebody has an accident and hurts themselves, it's always a bit of a downer. But we did a professional job and got something out of nothing."
"We compromised a little bit. The problem is you have to compromise the car set-up anyway to be able to overtake, and that just destroys your mid-section downforce. So you go low, but then you have to balance that off with is it going to rain? We had an excellent weather prediction here, and we got something out of a difficult situation."
"Not at all. It's going to be tough. We know that in Monza and Indianapolis it's going to be very tough. Suzuka will play to out strengths, but it will be tough for the balance of the season."
