How F1 rule changes to improve safety could also remove "unintended overtaking"

Ron Dennis Q&A

Ron Dennis experienced every sort of emotion during the Brazilian GP, from the pain of seeing Mika Hakkinen stall on the grid, to the pleasure of watching David Coulthard slice down the inside of Michael Schumacher and proceed to pull away. Interlagos was a strange race and, despite the victory, McLaren is not yet in the pacesetting position to which it is accustomed, but after the disappointment of Malaysia the signs are positive. A big step forward is promised for the next race in Imola, and that will be the real indication of how things might stand for the rest of the season. Adam Cooper spoke to Dennis in Brazil

"No, I don't think that's the right word. I think the guys have done an incredibly good job. We came here and we knew we were stronger, and also our race strategy was good. We compromised our dry set-up to accommodate the weather, because we had a very strong indication that it was going to rain. Our weather forecast was extremely accurate on quantity and timing. As you can see, once it got wet, we were much quicker. With the benefit of hindsight we left David out one lap too long, but we thought with the settings we had it might have been able to cope. So we took a bit of a chance, but as it happens once we were on wets we were so much quicker it really wasn't a problem."

"We could have gone a bit further, but we felt it was the right time. We got the whole thing well timed."

"Yeah, but please don't be an armchair expert! We're surrounded by those, and the reality is to predict plus or minus five minutes on rain is almost impossible. In the end it was right."

"It rained a bit longer than we anticipated, but not much longer, and as you can see it was the right tyre choice."

"Brilliant. I mean the overtaking move was great. I think he got a little bit squirrelly under one braking manoeuvre, but other than that, it was just an impeccable drive. I think the most difficult thing he had to do was pace himself in the last 20 laps. It's always difficult to know how hard to push, and it's very easy to make mistakes. There would be no problem to go quicker - the important thing is to go fast enough to win, and that's what he did."

"We will go into the next race and as at every race we will put at the disposal of both drivers the same equipment, and they will be racing that way for the rest of the season, until the points differential is such that logic ought to change the strategy."

"It's not a big issue, in reality. He's a very focussed individual. One race win, and he'll be back in it."

"The clutch started to drag a little bit. The bite point changed on the car from the morning, and a combination of everything saw him stall. What I think is a little bit disappointing is that I think he stalled at a time when they could have aborted the start."

"It's not clear cut in either direction, and it won't be until we analyse the data, and we give you an absolutely accurate description of it at the next race."

"He's not invincible, as today showed."

"The reality is that whenever Michael doesn't do a particularly good job, he's got reasons why. Unfortunately I don't think anybody will give David the credit that he deserves. It was an outstanding race, and as I said we compromised the performance of the car in the dry to make sure it was quick in the wet, and at the end of the day he delivered. And that's what being a racing driver is all about."

"Oh yeah, great! It is good of they're taking points [from Ferrari], and I wouldn't mind if they win some races, as long as we're second, and we've had a good fight. But not too many."

"Well, we're good friends, and they've been through a difficult patch, as we've been in the past. They're a thoroughbred, professional, focussed racing team, which is what I like to see, and what we are as well. If you are that sort of organisation, you need success, you can't survive without success."

"Well, they're going to win some races, but I said that even before we started the season."

"I think the team has got depth, and we respond hard in adversity. We did a good job. The thing about really getting to grips with a problem is that you actually activate a momentum in the company that keeps going. Maybe we'll fail, but we believe that we'll be better in Imola. Hopefully we can climb into a good position. We're working hard all the time. Obviously the races at the beginning of the season didn't go the way we wanted, so you try harder."
