Renault thought Schu had pole

Renault's engineering chief Pat Symonds has admitted that he expected Ferrari's Michael Schumacher to beat his driver Jarno Trulli to pole position for the Belgian Grand Prix at Spa

Symonds, who worked with Schumacher in his Benetton days, thought that the German ace would topped the Italian from the top spot on the final lap of qualifying.

"Yeah, I did!" he admitted. "Michael in the wet around Spa...It's a pretty terrifying thing, isn't it? We sat here thinking 'okay, this is great, but the Ferraris might still get in front of us yet' - so it's nice to beat them!"

Symonds also admitted that both Trulli and team-mate Fernando Alonso got the best of the weather conditions on offer, as rain showers turned qualifying into somewhat of a lottery.

"There was a bit of luck involved," he said. "Equally, you have to make your luck and it was a great team decision to go on the intermediates and it worked out for us with just that small window [in the weather]. It's happened the other way around in the past, but it worked for us today."
