Renault hits Monaco target

Renault's engineering head Pat Symonds has vowed that the team will be just as strong in the Monaco Grand Prix itself as it was in qualifying on Saturday, when Jarno Trulli took his first-ever pole position

Trulli will start first with team-mate Fernando Alonso in third, and Symonds is confident that Renault has got its race pace right as well as its obvious speed in qualifying.

"It's a great result for us," said Symonds. "Monaco is always a hugely tactical race. As everyone recognises, it's very difficult to overtake, so it's very important to be at the front. We made some good improvements with the car in testing last week. We've tuned our strategy for Monaco and it's turned out pretty much the way we wanted.

"The strategy here is different from other circuits, but you can't compromise things. You can't go for glory, it just doesn't work. Getting pole is just part of the overall strategy, and I can assure you that we believe we will have a strong race tomorrow as well."

On the subject of Trulli's performance, Symonds said: "He is a great qualifier and he has driven well in races recently. If you look back on his career, he's been particularly good at Monaco. If people have put money on him for Sunday, I think they've made a pretty good bet."
