Renault boss sets multiple podium aim

Renault CEO Louis Schweitzer has set his Formula 1 team a target of "four or five" podium finishes for the 2003 season

The French manufacturer launched its R23 challenger on track this morning at Paul Ricard, and Renault F1 chairman Patrick Faure outlined the goals he has been set by the Regie's top man.

"Now is the time to set more difficult targets," said Faure. "It's clear we won't be able to fight Ferrari, and probably not Williams, but if we are going to do that in 2004 and '05, then this year we must get on the podium.

"Louis Schweitzer has set us the target of finishing on the podium four or five times this year. That is what we must aim for. It's an ambitious target, but also a realistic one."

Fernando Alonso drove the R23 for a lap in front of the cameras this morning (Thursday).

"It's great to test the car for the first time," he said afterwards. "I am very happy with it. It's a great car to drive and I think it's going to be a great season for us."
