Relief for Herbert after first finish

Johnny Herbert sighed with relief after finally scoring his first points

for Stewart Ford by taking 5th in Canada.
Herbert escaped the first lap drama to pick up his first finish of the season and two valuable points.

'It was a relief to get my first finish and the points are a bonus after
all the problems I have had this season,' said Herbert. 'I knew my bad luck
could not carry on much longer and things would change round.

'Luckily I could see what happened at the start when Ricardo Zonta caused
all the drama at the first corner and was able just to drive right through
it. Hopefully this marks a turning point for me and I can go to the next
race in France with a lot more confidence.

'But it has been quite a weekend for the whole team with the announcement
that Ford had acquired the team and it being Jackie Stewart's 60th
birthday.

'I kept Eddie Irvine at bay for a few laps but when we came to the chicane
I thought he was too far back to make a passing move. When he went down the
inside he was going in too quickly to make the corner.

'I had to steer away to avoid him and we both went through the grass. It
was a good battle while it lasted but it's a shame I could not hold him
off.'

After his result he ran up to ITV interviewer Louise Goodman and kissed
her.

Herbert had joked in the past about Louise bringing him bad luck because she was always interviewing him after he had retired early from the races.
