Red Bull still in Renault engine talks

The Milton Keynes-based squad are on their first of a two-year engine deal with Ferrari, but Mateschitz is looking at moving the engines to his Toro Rosso team next season to make way for Renault power units.

Ferrari sporting director Jean Todt, however, has said in the past that he was not supportive of those plans.

Mateschitz said the decision was up to Ferrari, as he continues talks with world champions Renault to use their engines next year.

"It is still open if we will have two Ferrari engined- and two Renault-engined cars next season or if we have four with Ferrari engines," said Mateschitz. "The contract with Ferrari is for two years and we do not commit any breach of contract. To change the engine within our teams demands the cooperation of our partner.

"If our partner believes that an Italian engine in an Italian team with an Italian driver would be a good choice we would be happy to accommodate this. The decision is up to Ferrari, we will share this and not make any pressure. But we need the decision soon.

"But we should not overemphasize this as the importance of engines will be reduced in the overall packages by the new rules anyway. But we have the possibility to get Renault engines, and negotiations are ongoing."

Despite Ferrari yet to decide on their engine supply, Mateschitz revealed Toro Rosso had reached an agreement to part ways with current suppliers Cosworth at the end of the season, a year ahead of the end of their contract.

"This will be finished when the season ends," Mateschitz added. "We found an arrangement with (Cosworth co-owner) Kevin (Kalkhoven) in best mutual agreement."
