Raikkonen eyeing US GP victory

McLaren driver Kimi Raikkonen is aiming score his maiden win of the 2006 season at this weekend's United States Grand Prix

The Finn driver and his team have shown improved form since the British Grand Prix, with Raikkonen fighting for victory last weekend in Canada until a clutch problem delayed him.

He eventually finished in third place after making a driving error on the penultimate lap which cost him second to Michael Schumacher.

Raikkonen, still searching for his maiden victory of the season, believes Indianapolis could be the place where he finally returns to the top step of the podium.

"At Montreal, we were able to show the step forward we have made with the MP4-21 and hopefully this week in America we will be able to challenge for the top step of the podium," said Raikkonen in a team preview.

"The Indianapolis Motor Speedway is a great venue, and it is one of those everyone wants to say they have won at.

"You can really challenge for position here, for sure the best opportunity is slipstreaming along the straight section of the oval and pass under braking at the right hander that takes you back into the infield. It also helps that the track is so wide here."

Teammate Juan Pablo Montoya is also looking forward to the American race after a disastrous Canadian Grand Prix, where the Colombian retired after hitting the 'wall of champions'.

"After my race in Canada, I cannot wait to get straight back on track this weekend, as the car felt really quick," Montoya said.

"It is even better for me that we are at Indy this race and competing for the fans, who are amazing and I personally have awesome support from Colombia, so I am looking forward to getting out there and putting on a fantastic show for them."
