Q & A with Toro Rosso's Giorgio Ascanelli
Q. Were you confident that you could win the race?
Giorgio Ascanelli: I am never confident. Anything can go wrong at any time.
Q. What was the mood like in the build-up to the race?
GA: Well, again, if it was dry I don't think we could have hoped for better than third place. We knew that we stood a chance and the kid took it. I think he did a fantastic job.
Q. And all trouble-free during the race?
GA: Absolutely. It was as smooth as a baby's bottom.
Q. How concerned were you about Lewis Hamilton if he had not needed to change to intermediates?
GA: Frankly not. No.
Q. At what point did you know you had the win in the bag?
GA: With two to three laps to go. I wasn't sure what was going to happen with the rain. We needed the rain to keep the tyres in a good position. What could have happened was running out of tyres. But it didn't happen, so it is fine.
Q. You said on Saturday that you had not achieved the season's targets, which was to finish right behind Red Bull Racing. What now that you are ahead of them?
GA: We will give them some space in the next four races, so they can get their target!
Q. What are you expecting for the final four races of the season?
GA: To keep working, and nothing else. I am not sure this can be repeated but I think it will have a positive effect. It shows we can do it. It is a very good message. And if I may say, it is nice to see the smallest budget winning a race here at the fastest circuit in the world. It is nice to see a passionate man like Mr. Mateschitz having his efforts rewarded. And it shows that one day, if you try really hard, you can make it. That is it.
Q. How much has Sebastian developed as a driver since he has been here?
GA: He has done something amazing. He has matured. He is obviously learning a lot. He has more Euros than all of us! I think I have been happy and lucky in my old age to see another champion growing. I have never seen a champion growing and it is nice to see one. I may say I feel I have contributed a little bit. He is very polished, very shiny and he is not as rough as he was one year ago. I think he has got to learn some lessons yet, the most important one is not to be self-confident. I am sure he keeps his feet on the ground, he keeps his head clear and he will do a fantastic job.
Q. Can you see similarities between him and the drivers you've worked with in the past?
GA: Why do you want to say that? It is not appropriate. Every man is a human being, he is different and he has his own peculiarities. Let's not try to compare anybody.
Q. Is it possible to compare the feeling you have to win a race with Toro Rosso as to that of winning with McLaren or Ferrari in the past?
GA: It is like sex. It is never as good as the first time. When sex is good, it is very good. When sex is bad, it is still pretty good! That sums it up pretty much.
Q. Does this result change your driver plans for next year - that you could get a big star knocking on your door now?
GA: It is not a question I ask myself. I haven't thought about it, frankly. And quite honestly I don't really care.
Q. Do you hope there will be the same weather in Fuji and Singapore?
GA: We will take what comes. We've had our win, we are happy and we have to keep working with the same level of attention and what comes, comes. There are no wishes.
