Jaguar's new boy Antonio Pizzonia set the pace in the morning session on the first day of testing at the Barcelona circuit after a six-week test ban that came to an end today.
Pizzonia, who will make his Formula One debut with the Jaguar team next season, returned to the wheel of the Cosworth-powered R3 for this first time following a brief test for the Milton Keynes-based squad during the season. The Brazilian was less than two tenths of a second quicker than Ferrari's test driver Luca Badoer.
The dominant Italian team, World Champions last season, kicked off their preparations for the new campaign with only Badoer working at the wheel of an F2002 car. The Italian tester carried out tyre work for Japanese manufacturer Bridgestone, completing a total of 46 laps.
Briton Anthony Davidson was in charge of the testing duties for the British American Racing team, who had only one car on track today. Frenchman Olivier Panis, who last season drove for BAR, made his debut with the Toyota team today, completing nine laps and outpacing his new teammate and CART champion Cristiano da Matta, who covered 14 laps and finished nearly three seconds behind Panis.
Australian Mark Webber, who joined the Jaguar Racing team from Minardi, endured a torrid start to his life with the Ford-owned squad, his car suffering an engine problem after only two laps.
Testing will end at 5pm local time.
