Patrick Head Q&A
Not surprisingly, the mood in the Williams camp at the end of the Brazilian GP was one of frustration, after the team's best showing for four years was spoiled by other drivers using the FW23 for target practice. But on the positive side, Williams was right in the thick of the action, with Ralf Schumacher qualifying on the front row and Juan Pablo Montoya leading in confident style. It has not happened by chance of course. A competitive package is exactly what Frank Williams and Patrick Head planned for when they signed up with BMW back in 1997, later adding Michelin to the package. It has been a long and at times painful process, but finally they've made it, and a win can't be too far away. Adam Cooper spoke to Patrick after the race
"Well, obviously it was encouraging from a performance point of view, but disappointing from the point of view of the way the two cars went out. It's the third time this year that we've been assaulted from behind. You always get these comments from the driver who was behind saying, 'He braked early.' I think it's nonsense, really. At the end of the day Ralf said that in the corner in front of him he had cars all over the place, and I don't think he necessarily braked early, he braked at the point he needed to brake for the corner. It's the responsibility of the guy behind not to cause an accident like that. If you assault a car from behind or ride up a car from behind, I don't think you should be looking at the vehicle in front for fault."
"He did a very good job. I think he was well in control and was driving well within his capabilities, and it was obviously disappointing for him to be put out in that way. He had no problems, and he was very calm on the radio."
"I didn't see it properly, so I can't comment. But I gather it was very forceful!"
"I don't know what that was all about. I don't know what Verstappen thought he was doing. If somebody comes up to lap you, you keep out of his way, and give him due respect."
"We were obviously clearly on a one-stop, and had quite a lot of fuel on board, and could go quite a way beyond half way in the race."
"You always need to be quicker!"
"I certainly think we're back as serious competitors. But I think equally some tracks have different characteristics and different problems than others, and I can't say we'll definitely be equally as competitive at Imola. Michelin has got to choose a tyre that suits that track with whatever track temperature it's going to have on that day. There are quite a lot of variables in there, but yes, I think we'll be players this year."
"I thought we would be in a very good position in this race."
