Montoya upbeat for race chances

Juan Pablo Montoya claimed his fifth successive pole position at Magny-Cours for the French Grand Prix and is upbeat about prospects for recording his first win of the season

The Williams-BMW ace has been let down this season by Michelin's tyres being outperformed by Ferrari's Bridgestones, stopping him from converting his excellent qualifying form into maximum points scores.

But the Colombian said in France: "I was not expecting to get pole position, honestly. In fact, before the start of qualifying we were a little concerned about McLaren as well. But as far as the race goes I think Michelin has brought a more consistent tyre and I think we have a better chance than for a while."

"It was such a close fight and we though Ferrari was too quick here. I turned in a bit too early on the last lap at the last corner. But we have a good, consistent car. The Michelin tyres are a big step forward and the times we did in the morning practice were also more consistent."

Michael Schumacher is chasing his sixth win at Magny Cours but predicted a closer battle.

"I think it could be a much tighter race but I'm not sure we have got the full picture yet."
