Montoya Delighted with 'Needed' Win

Juan Pablo Montoya mastered Monaco's unforgiving streets to win the glamour Grand Prix of the Formula One season and end a 20-year barren streak for Williams.

Juan Pablo Montoya mastered Monaco's unforgiving streets to win the glamour Grand Prix of the Formula One season and end a 20-year barren streak for Williams.

The Colombian crossed the line 0.602 of a second ahead of McLaren's championship leader Kimi Raikkonen with Ferrari's World Champion Michael Schumacher a close third after a thrilling final chase to the flag.

It was Williams' first win in the streets of the Mediterranean principality since Finland's Keke Rosberg in 1983 and their pit wall erupted in delight as Montoya claimed the second win of his 41-race career.

"Everybody needed this," the Colombian said of his team's first win of the season. "It was definitely worth waiting for."

Montoya, whose win today was only his second Formula One victory after the 2001 Italian GP, compared winning in Monaco to the emotion of his 2000 Indianapolis 500 victory while racing in America.

"It's the most special race that you can win. To win here is fantastic," he said. "I think the team are really getting their act together."

German Ralf Schumacher, who had started from pole position and led for 20 laps, finished down in fourth position.
