Monaco Grand Prix: Practice Session Three

Michael Schumacher was fastest in Saturday morning practice from the Monaco Grand Prix. The German re-asserted his authority after Hakkinen snatched Thursday's top time at the death of Thursday's last practice

The session resolved into its usual battle for supremacy between McLaren and Ferrari, despite one or two unusual names briefly appearing at the head of the times throughout the period.

The track improved steadily over the course of the 45 minutes, and the first major player to show his hand was Ferrari's Rubens Barrichello.

Benefitting from extra testing during Friday's rest day, Schumacher went faster only to be overhauled by the flying McLaren of Mika Hakkinen.

There followed a brief hiatus while the top drivers worked on their cars, allowing Jordan's Heinz-Harald Frentzen and Jean Alesi in the Prost to dominate the times.

This passed all too quickly, before Michael Schumacher once again jumped to the fastest time, backing this up with an even quicker effort. Barrichello immediately set a time just over a tenth of a second behind his feted team-mate.

Hakkinen tried his best, but it was only good enough to put him second to Schumacher. Alesi held onto fourth, a fine performance in the improving Prost.
