Michelin Predict F1 Entry for Other Manufacturers

The Formula One tyre war is likely to develop further with new manufacturers joining the fray in the future, according to Michelin boss Pierre Dupasquier.

The Formula One tyre war is likely to develop further with new manufacturers joining the fray in the future, according to Michelin boss Pierre Dupasquier.

Michelin joined rivals Bridgestone in Grand Prix racing last year and have now achieved five victories - all with the BMW-Williams team - since their arrival. The French company now provides tyres for six of the eleven Grand Prix teams and Dupasquier has admitted he expects more rival companies to come into Formula One.

"The presence of two manufacturers acts as a spur to competition, but there will probably be other manufacturers as well in the future," said Dupasquier. "We are not particularly interested in taking on any more teams. Our objectives are to demonstrate to our current partners that we are the most innovative manufacturer."

Michelin proved impressively competitive in their first season back, but their overall competitiveness was hampered by inconsistency in their tyres. They know they must improve a further step this year if they are to help BMW-Williams and McLaren-Mercedes-Benz take on the Bridgestone-shod Ferrari team.

"We are trying to do the best everywhere," said Dupasquier. "But the overall competitiveness on the circuit results from an overall effort in aerodynamics, engine, tyres. The full package."
