McLaren boss attacks Monaco facilities

Ron Dennis has criticised the Monaco pits, calling it a 'third world' facility

The McLaren team boss was speaking as Grand Prix racing yet again shoe-horned itself into a modified car parking area on the harbour front at Monte Carlo.

Monaco is the most famous race in the calendar - the jewel in the Formula One crown - but it had undoubtedly the most cramped and dangerous facilities in the 17-race calendar.

While other circuits have developed their facilities on a grandiose scale Monaco remains among the worst despite the glamour of the race itself.

Space is so restricted only four of the teams fit in the harbour-front paddock and the other seven are based in a multi-storey car park half way up a nearby hillside that has been nicknamed 'Alcatraz'.

Teams regularly grumble privately about the circuit but the challenge and the glamour gives the event and unrivalled attraction.

This year there are again safety concerns that there could be an accident or a fire during a pit stop in the race.

"We bring a lot of money into principality, so you would think they would provide us with a better pit lane complex," said Dennis.

"It's all a bit third-world really."
