Manufacturers get F1 commission
Car manufacturers will now have an official body to represent their interests in Formula One thanks to the creation of a new FIA commission
The sport's governing body announced on Monday that its World Motor Sport Council has agreed to establish the 'Formula One Manufacturers' Advisory Commission.'
BMW's Professor Burkhard Goeschel has been invited to become the body's new chairman, while BMW, DaimlerChrysler, Ferrari, Honda, Renault and Toyota are all eligible to be members.
The FIA will be represented by president Max Mosley, technical delegate Charlie Whiting, and technical consultants Tony Purnell and Peter Wright.
The creation of the body comes after Goeschel and Mosley reached agreement for the future of F1 at a meeting in Munich in November - pending discussions about specific technical regulations.
The manufacturers' input into those rules can now be channelled by this new commission as moves are made to make F1 more environmentally friendly.
"We will make research work in F1 more road relevant," Mosley said in November. "We will move F1 from the technology of the 20th century to that of the 21st century, to move away from F1 being labelled as a dinosaur.
"The tide of world opinion has just turned regarding global warming. With the changes we have made, we have caught the tide. If we had missed it, F1 could have become irrelevant."
