Latest from Friday practice

McLaren appear to be taking control in practice for the Austrian Grand Prix

Both David Coulthard and Mika Hakkinen were out early in the second session, with the Finn closing to within 0.066s of his team mate.

The Ferrari's have had a few problems. Eddie Irvine came out to try and regain his 2nd position, but seemed to be struggling with his handling. The Ferrari locked-up several times, and generally looked twitchy and unstable.

His new team mate Mika Salo moved up to 5th, just 0.3s slower than Irvine, but then lost it and had a high-speed spin deep into the gravel. He ran back to the pits for the spare car.

Also visiting the scenery was Giancarlo Fisichella. The Benetton driver ran wide through the Rindt Kurve and tore his front wing off as he bounced through the gravel. Meanwhile Tora Takagi suffered a major engine failure in his Arrows and had a spin on his own oil. He has also made it back to the pits on foot.

The BARs have just moved into contention as well. Off the pace in the first session, Jacques Villeneuve leapt to 4th, while his team mate Ricardo Zonta improving to 7th.

Top six order after first twenty minutes: David Coulthard, Mika Hakkinen, Eddie Irvine, Jacques Villeneuve, Ralf Schumacher, Mika Salo.
