Lap by lap 48-78

Lap 51: Hakkinen pits, 8.4 seconds stationary. Irvine may have to pit

again in which case it's a straight fight to the flag. Barrichello pits ceding fourth temporarily to Frentzen.

Lap 53: Alesi going slowly, having clouted a barrier at Casino Square,
losing 10th place. Diniz, his team mate has already retired on the same lap.
Alesi continues after a pitstop to check the car over - only to stop
further round the lap.

Lap 54: Irvine's pit crew prepare for his second stop - he is 25 seconds
ahead of Hakkinen, and it will be close as to whether he can get ahead of
Hakkinen. Meanwhile, Schumacher has a problem losing two seconds a lap.

Lap 55: Hakkinen is closing on Schumacher. Ralf Schumacher pits from 10th.
Schumacher is still approximating a race pace, but much slower than his
previous speed. The Jordan pit are ready, as are the Ferrari pit.

Lap 56: Irvine pits from 2nd at 6.8 seconds, and retains second from
Hakkinen. Ralf Schumacher retires having spun into the barrier at the
hairpin.

Lap 57: Michael Schumacher has picked up the place and run the fastest
sector of the race. Frentzen pits and gets out ahead of Barrichello,
holding fourth place.

Lap 59: Schumacher is still losing 2 seconds a lap to Irvine, but appears
merely to be looking after his car, and allowing those behind to catch him.

Lap 63: Trulli spins from 7th, allowing Wurz past.

Lap 67: Hakkinen sets fastest lap of the race, a 1.22.259. In doing so,
the gap to Eddie Irvine has been reduced to seven seconds.

Lap 71: Schumacher has now lapped everyone up to fourth place, having
passed fifth placed Barrichello. However, Fisichella has closed up behind
Barrichello, and is only 0.9 seconds behind.

Lap 72: Rubens Barrichello crashes coming out of the Swimming Pool, letting
the Benettons into the final two points places.

Lap 75: Seven cars remain running, with Schumacher, Irvine, Hakkinen,
Frentzen, Fisichella and Wurz in the points places, and Jarno Trulli and
Alex Zanardi following up.

Lap 78: Michael Schumacher wins from his team mate Eddie Irvine with Mika
Hakkinen the final driver on the podium
