Kovalainen moves on from bad debut

Heikki Kovalainen has put his disappointing Formula One debut in the Australian Grand Prix two weeks ago behind him and vowed to make sure he won't make the same mistakes in the future

The rookie's Melbourne weekend started badly with a fuel pump problem bringing his Renault to a halt in Friday practice, severely limiting his running on the unfamiliar track. In qualifying he didn't get the best out of the car - setting the 13th fastest time, while his teammate Giancarlo Fisichella was sixth.

After the race, which the Finn finished in tenth position after a spin and an off-track excursion, team boss Flavio Briatore was very critical of him, labelling his race as 'rubbish'.

Yet Kovalainen says there are positive things that he can take from the race, including learning from his mistakes.

"No, I just learned from it," he replied when asked if he wants to forget about the last race.

"It sounded a bigger disaster than it really was. It was not the result that I wanted, and on my part there were lots of mistakes in the race. It all started from the practice and I did not do a good enough lap in qualifying.

"It is behind me now. I have to learn from the mistakes and we just move forward. It did not go well as a debut, but at the end of the day I still finished the race. There were some positive things about the race. I did learn many things during the race.

"I have to make sure the same mistakes do not happen again. We want a different kind of start next weekend, so that we can get a momentum being carried through to Saturday and Sunday. That is all..."

The next race is the Malaysian Grand Prix at Sepang in one week's time.
