Klien wants more in Malaysia

Jaguar new boy Christian Klien is aiming to improve on his solid Australian debut at this weekend's Malaysian Grand Prix

The 21-year old Austrian overcame a hydraulic failure during qualifying to finish 11th in his first GP and reckons that, as long as he can learn the Sepang track quickly enough, he could finish higher than that.

He has been working on his fitness with team-mate Mark Webber and Jaguar tester Bjorn Wirdheim in Langwaki in Malaysia since the Australian race in order to acclimatise to the heat of the country.

"I am really starting to understand that your physical and mental fitness is so important in the fight for finishing the race," he said. "Bjorn will be a great help in Sepang as he can focus on tyres while I am out learning the corners.

"I am working well with my mechanics and my engineers. They are a really good team and I would like to reward their hard work with some points. I know that this might take time but if I can work on my qualifying, then anything is possible."

Australian Webber was disappointed to retire in Melbourne with a gearbox problem, but he was still encouraged that Klien finished ahead of both Toyotas and believes his R5 has the potential to do better.

He said: "We have yet to see the full potential of the R5 and I am looking forward to putting it through its paces this weekend. The car is working very well with the Michelin tyres and of course we are very pleased that Cosworth was able to deliver on reliability in Australia. We will be looking for more of the same."

Jaguar's head of vehicle performance Dr Mark Gillan believes the team has pinpointed the faults that caused the technical problems in Melbourne and taken measure to make sure they do not re-occur.

"It is frustrating to say the least when you have completed over 6000km of testing to have not discovered the problems earlier," he said. "However, how can you look for a problem when you don't know it exists in the first place?"
