Kent residents back Brands Hatch
The 2002 British Grand Prix will be held at Brands Hatch - if local residents have their say. Brands Hatch circuit in Kent has the contract to run the British Grand Prix from 2002, but has not yet secured planning permission to bring to track up to FIA standards
Environmental groups have been lobbying against the destruction of areas of woodland which would be necessary in the event of the Grand Prix being staged at the track.
However, a recent poll suggests that local residents are strongly in favour of the developments going ahead to secure a Grand Prix in Kent.
More than three to one, 65%, voted in favour of the developments.
Although concerns were expressed about the noise levels and the loss of woodland, most of residents polled were put at ease by the circuit's proposals to create new areas of woodland, accessible to the public, to compensate for those that the development work would remove.
"It is most encouraging so many people support our plans to host the British Grand Prix at the famous Brands Hatch circuit from 2002-2007," says Rob Bain, the CEO of Brands Hatch Leisure group.
"We are also pleased they back the initiatives we are taking to protect the environment," he adds.
