Juan Pablo Montoya Q&A

Juan Pablo Montoya earned his first Formula 1 pole in superb style at Hockenheim, edging out team mate Ralf Schumacher on his home circuit. The thought of the pair heading into the first corner together is a fascinating one. Over the past couple of races the Colombian has begun to put serious pressure on Ralf, and in both France and Britain found himself stuck behind him as the debate raged in the Williams pit as to what the team orders should be. At Hockenheim the likely strategy is for both cars to run as far as possible on a full tankload, and it could be a close-run thing. Adam Cooper heard Montoya's thoughts on the day

"It means a lot. To get the first pole in F1 is very exciting. I think the team have done a fantastic job. It's pretty amazing how quick we were today, and to beat Ralf in Germany is very good."

"Yeah, a little bit. On my first run it was a really steady lap, and when I looked at the lap time, I couldn't believe it."

"Yes, I was surprisingly quick in the stadium. I pushed it really hard, I pushed it harder than I've ever done through there."

"We tried everything; high downforce, low downforce. The question mark is what everyone else is going to run. I think in the morning you can get an idea of what everybody else is going to run as a downforce level. Maybe the optimum lap time is to have a bit more downforce, and you'll be bog slow on the straight."

"Yeah, the car's got a big tank but the McLaren's got a bigger tank than us. A little bit I would think - not much, but they always go a bit further than us. So it will be very interesting how it goes."

"Yesterday [Friday] with a big load of fuel, we were competitive. I was second quickest yesterday, and we had fuel on board. Irvine didn't have any fuel, as we saw today. It was very good, and it makes me really happen."

"Obviously we'll see what happens in the race, how it plays. Initially we'll try to
do a steady race."

"We were on different strategies, so it makes it... He wouldn't lose much if he would have let me by. If we're on the same strategies tomorrow, it could look a bit different."

"Yeah, I didn't even ask for him to move out of the way."

"Yeah. I was going to have a go at him, and they told me to stay behind him. That's the only thing I know."

"We'll see I think we'll decide the strategy tomorrow morning. But if we run the same strategy, I don't think we'll risk the cars. Crashing into each other would be really stupid."

"No, I've got the priority on who pits last, because I'm ahead of him [on the grid]."

"We haven't at the moment. We've got good tyres for tomorrow. The tyres seem to hold quite well in the hot conditions."

"Oh yeah! It is, honestly. It's been a big fight with Ralf since the start. The last few races I've been quicker than him and more competitive, and to beat him in his home race... In the F3000 races here I did well, but in the races I always struggled, and to get the pole here is brilliant."
